Capri, regina di rocce / nel tuo vestito color giglio e amaranto / son vissuto per svolgere dolore e gioia / la vigna di grappoli abbaglianti conquistati nel mondo .

 - PABLO NERUDA, 1952

These are the opening verses of the famous poem Queen of Rock, composed by Pablo Neruda and inspired by his love for this island which he perceived as a solitary gem, a natural wonder.

A captivating island, with a mysterious and intriguing narrative behind it – once a refuge of the Roman Emperor Tiberius – and a melting pot of ancient history and local legends.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Capri enthused generations of foreign artists, intellectuals, and bohemians with its breathtaking beauty, towering cliffs, and magic light. A unique opportunity for European artists to engage with landscapes of extraordinary beauty accompanied by a rich cultural heritage. The works created during and after these trips not only encapsulated the magnificence of the places visited but also told the story of the island as a vibrant cultural environment, a place where ideas and creativity could blossom freely.

From intellectuals to princes, everyone longed to spend a few days among the wonders of the wild yet refined nature of the island of Capri. Many decided to stay for months, even years, until settling for good on the island.

Capri thus became an important centre of international culture, a muse for generations of creative spirits on a constant quest for beauty and freedom, a place to give voice to their “creative idleness”.

This exhibition celebrates not only the natural beauty of Capri, but also the artists’ ability to capture the very essence and soul of this unique place. An opportunity to immerse ourselves in the enchantment and magic of Capri through the works of foreign artists who found inspiration and refuge on this stunning island.
