Private collectionAntonio Mancini was one of the most eminent exponents of European painting in the 19th century. He was admired and imitated by Italian and foreign artists and acclaimed by critics and public alike during his own lifetime. His most fervent admirers included renowned Italo-American painter John Singer Sargent, who was to say of him: "I have met in Italy the greatest living painter". Born in Rome into a humble family of Umbrian origin, Mancini trained at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Naples under the guiding hand of Domenico Morelli. His artistic career got off the ground in 1868 with a painting entitled "Lo scugnizzo" ("The Urchin") which earned him his master's praise and admiration.
